An influential figure among avant-garde German artists, Arthur Kaufmann (1888-1971) was born in Mulheim, Germany and studied art in Europe. In the 1930s, he emigrated to the United States, where his career led him to paint portraits, landscapes and other works. His portraiture clients included such notables as Edward G. Robinson, Albert Einstein and George Gershwin. Kaufmann's portrait of Gershwin is now held by the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution. Kaufmann's pre-war paintings are in museums in Mulheim and Dusseldorf, Germany.
